Understanding Motivation and Supporting Change in People with a Mental Illness
1 day Training for Carers
Based on the Boston University Model of Psychiatric Rehabilitation
Saturday 17th November, 2007, 10.00am-4.00pm
People with mental illness face many barriers to change. The experience of dealing with a mental illness often leaves people feeling hopeless and helpless. Recovering from this can take a very long time, and it is often the Carers who are there for the long term. This training is specifically designed for carers, providing a proven framework within which to understand the change process, deal with the often accompanying frustrations and to develop specific strategies to support change and to redevelop hope for yourself and the person you are supporting.
Areas covered include; • Understanding the dynamics of motivation • The specific impact of Mental Illness on goals • Practical tools and strategies for encouraging and supporting change.
Training is provided by Mara Pacers, BBSc (psych), BSW, MPPM, PhD cand, who has over 20 years experience in the mental health field in both clinical and community based settings. Programs that she has designed and managed have twice won the Aust and NZ Gold Award for Mental Health Services (1997 Prahran Mission & 2006 Aspire Tasmania). She has been providing consulting and training in Recovery Based Approaches for mental health professionals, Carers and Consumers across Australia for the past 8 years.
